Attention Pregnant Mothers!

Gum diseases are more common in mothers who gave birth to a Low Weight Baby (DAB) compared to mothers who gave birth to a Normal Weight Baby.

In our first issue, we mentioned that oral infections, dental and gum diseases are diseases that concern our entire body and can lead to problems related to “heart diseases, strokes, respiratory system, endocrine system (Diabetes), and urinary system”. One of the most important problems among these is that dental and gum diseases affect the urinary system.

According to statistics, the annual birth rate is around 1.5 million. Again, according to statistics, premature birth rates are around 8 percent and infant mortality rates are 17 per thousand.

During pregnancy;

• Smoking – alcohol – drug use
• Improper prenatal care
• Low socioeconomic level
• Hypertension
• Inappropriate gestational age
• Diabetes
• Genito-urinary infections

They increase the risk of giving birth to a low-weight baby.

Urinary system infections are one of the most important reasons for premature births and low-weight baby births (Pregnant women with bacteria in their urine have a risk of premature birth, weighing less than 2500 grams, before the 37th week).

In premature births and low birth weight babies; Congenital anomalies, respiratory disorders and neurodevelopmental disabilities can be discussed. Therefore, the social and economic problems that Low Weight Babies will create are huge.

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common vaginal disease in the reproductive period, and this condition is caused by changes in the vaginal microflora. Bacterial vaginosis is a risk factor for premature birth, premature rupture of membranes and low birth weight babies.

The most frequently isolated bacteria when amniotic fluid is checked in women who give birth prematurely is F. Nucleatum.

The presence of nucleatum in the amniotic fluid indicates that the infection may have been transferred from the oral cavity hematogenously.

In women who gave birth prematurely, F. Nucleatum strains cultured from amniotic fluid and F. Nucleatum strains in the mouth (subgingival plate) were found to be very similar.

Gum disease was found to be more common in mothers who gave birth to a Low Weight Baby (LLB) compared to mothers who gave birth to a normal weight baby.

It has also been shown that periodontitis is more likely to cause DAD than smoking and alcohol.

When the mouths of mothers who gave birth to Low Weight Babies (LBW) were examined, persistent microorganisms that cause gingivitis were found to be at a higher rate. (Higher rates of Aa, Forsythusi P. Gingivalis and T. Denticola were found in the subgingival area.(

Gingivitis, which we call gingivitis during pregnancy, is seen between 30 percent and 100 percent. There is a very important relationship between gingivitis and pregnancy.

Root Canal Treatment

“It is a fact that no substance or treatment can replace natural teeth, and for this reason, we must protect our natural teeth to the fullest by having them taken care of and treated on time.”

We see that in root canal treatment, the idea of ​​dealing with the nerves of the tooth is the idea that scares patients the most.

We observe that those who have experienced root canal treatment once understand that this idea is greatly exaggerated, and that the fear of root canal treatment is generally found in those who have had a bad experience during treatment.

Root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia to eliminate pain by removing the nerves and vessels of the diseased tooth. Otherwise, the tooth needs to be extracted. Targeted in the treatment; It is the three-dimensional cleaning, shaping and filling of the entire root space from the canal mouth to the root tip.

Of course, it is essential to work with sterile instruments in all these procedures. A root canal treated tooth looks like a normally filled tooth when viewed in the mouth.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY IS IMPORTANT IN ROOT TREATMENT

Root canal shaping and cleaning is always one of the most important stages towards the success of the treatment. At this point, the introduction of the rotary file system with electronic endo motors, which have a history of at most 10-15 years and are constantly being developed, has opened a new era in root canal treatment. With these motors, ni-ti files, which are metal memory files, return to their previous positions when removed from the canal, no matter how much they are bent in the root canal. A common feature of rotary files, which are used even in curved root canals due to these features, is that the files are made of nickel-titanium alloy. In short, the files we call Ni-ti are more flexible than classical files.

Due to these features, it provides the advantage of being used comfortably even in curved root canals. We can say that the treatment performed with endo motors and rotary files, which are technically new systems, is convenient for both the physician and the patient. The process takes place in a shorter time and with better equipment. Thus, the time the patient stays in the chair is reduced.

Of course, no matter what system we use, it is essential to work according to the rules of the technique.

Toothbrushes:

Miadent physicians recommend that people brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Replace toothbrushes every three to four months, or more often if the bristles are visibly dull or worn.
Manual or electric toothbrushes can be used effectively.

Toothbrush Care:

Toothbrushes should not be shared. Sharing a toothbrush can lead to the exchange of body fluids and microorganisms between people.
Rinse the toothbrush thoroughly after each use to remove any remaining paste and debris.
After use, store toothbrushes in an upright position and let them dry. Storing a damp toothbrush in a closed container encourages microbial growth more than exposing it to open air.
Toothbrushes should be replaced approximately every three to four months or more frequently if the bristles become matted or worn. As the bristles wear out, the effectiveness of the brush decreases.

Toothbrushes have been shown to harbor bacteria (including fecal coliform bacteria, which can be released into the air when the toilet is flushed or spread onto a toothbrush when the owner touches a contaminated surface before handling his or her brush). Although toothbrushes have been shown to harbor bacteria, there is no evidence that these bacteria cause adverse health effects. However, some patients may be interested in sterilizing their toothbrushes. Although there is little data in the literature regarding sterilizing a toothbrush, one study shows that soaking a toothbrush in 3 percent hydrogen peroxide or Listerine mouthwash greatly reduces bacterial load (i.e., 85 percent).

Microwaving or putting toothbrushes in the dishwasher is not recommended as such high heat can damage the brush. Toothbrush disinfectant devices are available.

Tooth Brushing Methods:

The World Dental Association recommends brushing teeth for two minutes twice a day using toothpaste. Brushing for two minutes has been shown to provide clinically significant plaque removal, and the use of a fluoride-containing toothpaste has been shown to increase fluoride concentration levels in biofilm fluid and saliva and is associated with a reduced risk of tooth decay and remineralization.

There are several techniques for brushing teeth; either may have advantages depending on the patient’s specific needs. The World Dental Association recommends that people place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and remove plaque from just above and below the gum edge, gently moving the toothbrush back and forth in short strokes. To clean the inner surfaces of the front teeth, one should tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down movements. Regardless of the technique used, scrubbing should contact all surfaces.

What are Braces?

Braces are orthodontic devices that correct crooked and misaligned teeth.

When people think of orthodontics, this treatment is normally the first treatment that comes to mind. Braces are used for both aesthetic and functional reasons, not only to straighten a patient’s smile but also to realign their jaw.

What Are Braces and How Do They Work?

Bracket:

The most popular types of braces use brackets, which are small, square-shaped pieces of metal or ceramic. They are placed in the center of each tooth and are staggered depending on the patient’s needs and how their teeth are aligned.

Ark Full:

A metal archwire passes through the center of the brackets and applies constant pressure to the teeth. The wire gradually shifts the teeth into their ideal positions.

Elastic Ligature:

Elastic ligatures are small rubber bands that go around each bracket. Ligatures ensure that the arch wire remains in its socket. They also help guide teeth into their correct positions. Elastics come in a variety of sizes and colors and are replaced at every orthodontic adjustment appointment.

Chain Elastic:

Chain elastics or power chains replace the elastic ties on each tooth. They put even more pressure on the teeth and create a clenching force that pulls the teeth together. Typically, power chains are used at the end of treatment.

Tel Ligatür:

Wire ligatures are thin, stainless steel wires that hold the arch wire in place. Wires also secure individual brackets to each tooth. These can be used in place of elastic ligatures when it is difficult to retain the archwire in the bracket.

Coil:

Coils, also called coil springs, are placed between two brackets when the teeth are very close together (overlap). The coils separate the teeth and restore the patient’s bite.

Rubber band:

Rubber bands attach to the hooks and connect the top and bottom brackets together. It ensures proper alignment of teeth and helps reposition the jaw. Rubber bands are applied and removed daily by the patient.

• Traditional Metal Brackets
